The Bead Report

Beer N Beadz Sept 17th, 2005

Hosted by Ania Kyte, Mission

Here is Ania's home studio in Mission. She is well known on Ebay as Turtle Beads, and here is the namesake. As well as lampworking, she does incredible beading and is the head of the Fraser Valley Beaders group. This event was held on Saturday so that we could make it out to Mission (it's not really that far!!) and we had a lovely potluck supper.

While we were eating, we watched a video by Jim Smircich (compliments of Susan Ewart). Close attention is being paid to his instructions. The next day, I tried one of his raked dot techniques, Cathy made a hollow Jim's way, and Heidi tried his wavy bead.

Some of Ania's beads.
Our demo theme was Halloween beads, starting with a ghost bead.

Ania shows us her ghost bead. Start with a round bead. Then attach a hot gather to the bead and trail it off, a couple of times. She made it look easy, but temperature is key.
Attach some raised dots for the eyes.

Then a tiny dot of grey stringer where the mouth will be, and then poke the mouth into an O.
And there he is.

Now for a Halloween pumpkin. Tamara pulls a stringer for the tendrils first.
After making a pear shaped bead, she uses a putty knife to make the indents for the pumpkin.

She attached the leaves, and then uses her rake to pull out the points.
Some curly tendrils complete the holiday pumpkin.

Our always popular bead exchange.

Ania has her turtle aquarium, plus two other aquariums full of aquatic life, corals, plants and fish. Thanks to Ania (and Alan and Alex) for a lovely evening.

We had a special event in September as well at Alexx Cheng's in Victoria. Photos coming soon.
