the Reach Gallery

the Reach GalleryThe Reach Gallery Museum in Abbotsford celebrated their 5th Anniversary with a swanky summer soiree.  The date was September 14, 2013.

The Pacific Pyros were invited to demonstrate glass bead making as part of the evenings entertainment.  We previously had our beads and jewelry on display in their gallery so to be invited back was a big deal.

Ania and Alicia spent the evening demonstrating the art of glass beadmaking.  Along with their demonstrations they also made sales and answered questions about glass beadmaking.

The music and atmosphere of the gallery was incredible and the food was lovely.

Beer & Beadz – August 2013

August 3, 2013, Steve Kristensen’s studio, Chilliwack, BC

While I wasn’t able to attend Steve’s B&B, it sounds like it was well attended and his studio has been described as everyone’s dream.

As most of you know Steve is also a tool maker and has oodles available.  If you’re looking for those great big hole mandrels, contact Steve.

Mikelson’s Festival of Arts

Mikelson’s Festival of Arts is a summer event that features local artisans.   This year was the 40th anniversary  and to mark that achievement, the Pacific Pyros Glass bead makers decided to do demonstrations of our craft.  Members participated in doing live lampworking demonstrations , much to the delight of the public.  Many were amazed by the skill involved in making a glass bead.  We were blessed with fantastic weather and beautiful surroundings.  All that, and melting glass too!  Couldn’t get much better!

Beer & Beadz – July 2013

July 11, 2013, Elizabeth Owre’s garden studio, Vancouver, BC

A great get together at Elizabeth’s garden studio.  We enjoyed snacks of fresh fruit and baked goods.  Melanie brought some glass left over from the last Whistler event so we drew names for it.

Elizabeth demo’d her hollow beads and Melanie finished the demo with how to use a reactive purple frit by TAG.  Debbie demo’d a large dotted and dragged disk.

Beer & Beadz – June 2013

June 22, 2013, Leslie Fords studio, Squamish, BC

Once again, Leslie was an excellent host.   The munchies were great and her glass stash is unbelieveable!

Only a couple of us made it out this time unfortunately but we still had a great time!  We started off watching a DVD on silver fuming, very interesting.  A couple of us sat down to the torch and made a few beads but only 1 made it to the kiln.

… until next time!

Whistler Molten Experience 2013

Molten Experience – Whistler Gathering 2013

Date: April 26, 27 & 28th, 2013
Time: Glass-focused retreat with lodging, food, and fire!
Guest Demonstrator: Amy Waldman-Smith from Ontario
Location: Edgewater Lodge, Whistler, BC

Another great gathering of the Pacific Pyros and others at the 2nd annual Whistler Molten Experience.

Once again our accomodations were the beautiful Edgewater Lodge about 15 minutes from Whistler Village.  We had a bit of rain on the Saturday but otherwise it was wonderful.  Even in the rain the view from the lodge patio of the lake and surrounding mountains was breathtaking.

Our headline guest demonstrator this year was the amazing Amy Waldman-Smith who demonstrated her beautiful Ottoman bead.

Other demonstrators were Joanne Andrighetti demonstrating blown hollow beads and Andrea Symons who demonstrated her beautiful native style pendant beads.

All demos were held in the Gazebo which was much warmer this year thanks to some modifications and a wood stove.  We were all very comfortable.  This years demo’s were also recorded this year and projected to a big screen TV behind the demonstrator so everyone was able to see the demo easily.  4 work stations and 2 kilns were set up for open torch.

Our food was organized by Kirsten & Allan with Allan being our head chef.  We enjoyed kabobs and burgers, fresh salads and fruit.  Breakfast was provided by the lodge and once again was great.

Looking forward to next year.  Stay tuned for details…
