Beer N Beadz May 21st, 2006

Bavin Glassworks, Invermere, BC

Our May Beer and Beadz was held May 21st at Bavin Glassworks in Invermere, BC. Our hosts, Pat, Bonnie and Ryan Bavin put on a great glass-blowing demonstration, and put out a really spectacular feast for us. Thank you so much. To see more of their studio and work, visit www.bavinglass.com.

Workshops were held at Bavin Glass in the afternoon. A fitness instructor showed us some exercises to relieve strain caused by beadmaking. If anyone would like her notes, they are available from Tamara. Then Pat Bavin gave us some tips on colour theory.

In the evening, the main event! A project combining glass blowing with flameworking. Ryan Bavin started with a standard vessel form with stripes added by pressing the hot glass into an optic mold containing stringer.
The vessel is blown out.

 And necked.

It is then flattened into a disc.
Ryan is applying heat to the center, as he works at pushing a hole through the center.
Opening up the center hole. He used a knife to make the final cut through,

He applied a disc of clear glass to the end, and then is applying the punty.
The transfer is complete, time to re-heat.
 His assistant is Natalie Ruby.

Now Natalie gathered some hot glass, rolled it in some frit and Ryan is applying some surface decoration.

Leah Duperrault is heating up a large gather of colour in the torch.
She plunges it into a graphite mold. These are molds that they make with a sandblaster.
Then the "mountain top" is attached to the "bead".

Now they are going to attach some beads that are preheated in the kiln. For each one that they attach they start with a small application of hot glass from the furnace
Then Pat Bavin puts on his protective gear, reaches into the kiln and pulls out the bead, pressing it into the bit of hot glass.
A little direct heat on the attached bead and then the whole thing goes back into the glory hole for a reheat. This was repeated many times - how many did they have in there, anyway?

Pat is ready to catch it as Ryan knocks it off the punty.
And voila! Here it is all cooled down the next day. Lots were drawn for it, and Allen Kyte won it.

So, on to the party. The Bavins put out a lovely spread which we all enjoyed.
On the left is Bonnie Bavin.
Ania Kyte and her little trooper, Alex.

Ryan Bavin & Allen Kyte, the lucky winner.
 The Bead Exchange
This was the first exchange the Invermere crowd has done, and they seemed to get a big kick out of it.

Thanks to Bavin Glass for hosting this fun event. It was a wonderful complement to the Molten Obsessions opening, and especially appreciated by the out-of-town visitors.
