The Bead Report

Beer N Beadz October 20th, 2005

The Glass Onion, Vancouver

This year our annual Hallowe'en Beer N Beads took place at The Glass Onion in Vancouver. Hosted by Holly, Renata and Susan, we all "gathered" for an evening of fun, food and a common love of glass.

Before our demos took place, we all had time to talk and share ideas.
Of course, what would a party be if not for all the delicious treats?!! Nice hat, Heidi.

Tamara started off our demos by making a leaf. For more detailed instructions on how to make a Leaf, check out the May 2005 Bead Report.
When the leaf comes out of the mould, it tends to have a rather roundshape. To get a more
pointed end, Tamara heats the tip and gently pulls with tweezers to a more pointed shape.

Holly was our next demonstrator who showed us how she makes her bats. Spooky!!
After starting off with a round bead for the body, Holly adds a small gather on either side. She melts and shapes them into wings. Now a small bead around the top for the bat's head. To make the ears, melt just a small gather of glass. Touch to the the top of the head and pull off. Add 2 dots of white for the eyes and you're done!

Our next demonstrator was Heidi Baxter. She showed us how she makes her double hollow beads. She starts off with a small round bead in the middle of your dipped mandrel. She marvers this bead gently to flatten it out.

Here we see Heidi building up the discs to form the hollow bead. She has already completed one hollow bead and is now working on the second one. Remember to keep flashing your bead to keep it warm.
Heidi is melting in the last 2 discs. She made it look so easy!

Here are some examples from the talented artists who participated in the bead exchange.
Here are our finished products. Thanks to Tamara, Holly and Heidi for stepping up to the torch!
