The September Beer and Beads was held at Andrighetti Glassworks, in Vancouver. It was a good night with a great turn out of Pyros. We had a special guest show up, Susan Hood came in all the way from Nova Scotia. She did a wonderful demo on a blown out seashell.

Susan starts the demo. She uses a
mandrel that has a hole in the side of it.
She plugs the end of the mandrel with bead release. Here she is heating her rod.

Susan builds a hollow bead around the hole in the mandrel. She does not worry about how it looks at the start. She says
it all works out in the end.

Once she has sealed the hollow she quickly slides her hand down to cover the hole in the mandrel, if you do not do this your hollow will collapse.

Susan heats the bead and blows through the end of the mandrel to expand the hollow. She reheats the bead in the area she wants to blow out and then blows again. This action blows out a section of the bead.

Once she has her hole in the side of the bead she returns the bead to the heat and heats the edges of her blown out hole.

Using some tweezers she shapes the edges of the hole. Depending on what she is using the bead for decides how she is going to shape it.

The finished bead.
What a great shell.

Melanie is heating some tweezers to create a new tool, as Deb Tarry looks on.

She heats them up and then twists
them so now the flat edges of the
tweezers are on the sides.

The finished tool. They still need to be ground down to get the fine thin edge they need.

Here is Pat, happier than a pig in poop
with her new tool made by Melanie.

We would like to thank Joanne for a great Beer n Beadz. The Demo by Susan Hood was awesome and the company great. I have to apologize to everyone. Being new at this, there is always something I forget and again I forgot the pictures of the bead exchange. The theme was food and the beads were wonderful. I promise I will get better at this.
