Beer & Beadz – December 2016

Each year Kerry hosts the annual Christmas party and B&B.  Everyone brings an appetizer to share, a beverage to drink, and a gift to exchange.  The gift exchange is a pick & steal style where a person picks a gift and either opens it or uses it to steal someone else’s gift.  The only rule is that a gift can only be stolen 3 times so there is a strategy to this game.

In keeping with our Beer & Beadz tradition there was also a theme for this event.  Kerry challenged us to show the progression of our beads.  Bring or show one of our “firsts” as well as one of our “current” to show the progression from the original bead to where we are now.  The results were impressive.

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!

AGM/Beer & Beadz – March 2016

Our Annual General Meeting was hosted by Debbie Armstrong during our March Beer N Beadz event.

We discussed the past years events like the continually growing attendance to our monthly Beer N Beadz. It’s not unusual now to see 10 – 15 members at these events.  In 2015 we also have seen our membership increase by 13 new members. The success and future of Bling – Wearable Art Show & Sale was a hot topic and finally the nominations for our new 2016 Executive.

Say hello to your 2016 Executive
President: Kirsten Rankel
Vice-President: Debbie Armstrong

Beer & Beadz – February 2016

February’s Beer & Beadz was hosted by Melanie Graham and there was a good turn out regardless of the nasty conditions outside.

Melanie gave us a tour of your studio and glass storage.  Wow is Melanie ever organized.  As mentioned in the previous newsletter, Melanie is now also selling frit and we got the opportunity to see “the stock”.

One of the things Melanie was very proud to show off was her new ventilation system built by Kirsten’s husband Al.  It is quiet, inexpensive and efficient.  She demo’d some new CIM colors she’s testing and discussed how she stays on task day after day now that she is making beads full time.

The evening ended with a bead exchange.  The theme was “love”, so we were challenged to bring beads that we associated with “love”.  There were plenty of hearts but there were also several “lovely” beads.

Beer & Beadz – October 2014 – Updated

Updated!

Another great turn out for our monthly Beer & Beadz!  Kirsten and Al were awesome hosts.

Kirsten demonstrated her “Armadillo” bead and several of us got a chance at the torch to try her technique.

The bead exchange was amazing.  The theme was “black & white” and the challenge was to bring your black & white inspired beads for the exchange.  All I can say is WOW!! The level of imagination was unlimited.

There was no shortage of beautiful beads to look at.  Kirsten has a fabulous table top cabinet where she stores her large collection of beads and Naaz added a few more beads to her collection when Melanie brought out some of her new beads for Show & Tell.  They were a beautiful dichroic blue.

October’s Beer & Beadz will be hosted by Kirsten on October 24 at 6:30/7pm.

The theme is Black & White and we’ve been challenged to think outside the box for this theme. Of course you need to incorporate black & white into your bead but that’s the easy part. This should be fun!

There will be plenty of torch time with plenty of the themed colors available. Is black & white even a color? These colors do not have to be the only colors you use but need to be dominant in the bead.

Bring a snack to share and your themed beads for the bead exchange and don’t forget your diddy’s.

Beer & Beadz – September 2014 *Updated*

UPDATED

.. September’s Beer & Beads was hosted by Stephanie Dieleman.  Her bright and beautiful studio was the meeting place for a large gathering of Pyros members from Vancouver Island to Chilliwack.  It’s great to see these events so well attended and not just from members in the direct local area.  We even had a new member join this night.  Welcome Jean!

The theme this evening was BUY, SELL & TRADE.  Stephanie had a large amount of glass working tools for sale from presses to shears.  She also layed out oodles of glass, frit and powders for us all to play with during torch time.

She demonstrated her large glass ring beads. She makes it look so easy!  I demonstrated a hot pink bead.  It was the first time I’d ever worked with natural gas rather than propane.  You’ll really have to work at it to get a muddy bead as natural gas burns so clean.

Thanks Stephanie for hosting this months Beer & Beadz!

September’s Beer & Beadz will be held at Stephanie Ann’s studio. If you haven’t been there before YOU MUST see it. It’s awesome! She also teaches art classes, so painting, sewing, and so on. Her B&B will be held on Friday, September 19 at 7pm and her theme is BUY, SELL & TRADE. So if you still have stuff you want to buy, sell or trade bring it.

Stephanie, like Melanie has not yet decided on her demo. I’m sure we could offer suggestions so feel free to send me your ideas and I’ll pass them on.

Bring a little something to share and bring your diddy’s.

Check the Events page for address details.

See you there!

Beer & Beadz – August 2014 UPDATED

UPDATED!

… and for you who missed it, Melanie’s B&B was awesome!  Melanie has the studio we all dream of, lots of room, lots of glass and lots of tools.

The day started a little late as most of us were stuck in a traffic jam in Abbotsford but once through that mess there were more than a dozen of us sitting in Melanie’s 1/2 acre backyard munching on chips, dip, fruit and veggies.

Although she was ready with the BBQ, no one seem to need it.  I think we were all more interested in watching Melanie’s demo!

Melanie demonstrated her beautiful face beads.  She already had molds made and ready to go but she also walked us through preparing the molds using wax.

She also spent time telling us about some of beautiful sculptures and collaborations and what inspired them.

A good time was had by all and thank you Melanie for hosting this Beer & Beadz.  We look forward to your next one.

This months B&B will be held at Melanie Rowe’s studio. Since she lives in Chilliwack her event will be held on Sunday, August 17 and will start anytime after lunch and go until 6 pm. It will be a pot luck, picnic style, get together. If you have burgers or hot dogs bring them as Mel’s got a BBQ. Bring a cooler if you need to keep stuff cold. Bring your beverages, your sunglasses, your sunscreen and a lawn chair.

The theme is Garage Sale so feel free to bring your gently used tools you don’t use anymore or your overstock of glass! Glass always gets lots of attention when your bartering! Just about anything is game for this theme. Melanie hasn’t decided yet what she will be demo’ing so we’re in for a surprise!

For address details, check the Events section.  An RSVP would be appreciated so Melanie has an idea of how many to expect.

See you there!

Beer & Beadz – July 2014

July’s Beer n Beadz was held at Elisabeth’s beautiful garden studio.

The weather was warm, the food was awesome and the turn out was large.

Elisabeth demo’d using enamels in glass bead making.  She sprinkled color on the bead she was making and melted the color in.   The result was a deep color in the middle of the bead and a fade of color to each end.

Beer & Beadz – June 2014 – Updated

Well if you weren’t there you missed a great B&B! Leslie has a great studio and lots of cool tools and rare glass.

Leslie did a cabochon demo using a round and a heart shaped mandrel.  The heart shaped bead ended up huge!  She also demo’d the webbing technique using Double Helix glass.

Because the theme was the beach, we were challenged to submit our interpretation of that in a bead.  What a great challenge.  Everyone had their own reason why their bead was related to the theme.

Thanks for hosting Leslie.  The drive home was beautiful and scenic and not too busy.  Until next time.

June’s B&B will be held at Leslie Ford’s studio on June 22.  Arrive any time after 12:30

Theme: the theme is the beach.  Bring your beach related beads.  That can be beads that were inspired by the beach, the color of the beach, found on the beach, sandy colored, beads in bikinis … naked beads :)

Demo: cabochon beads.

Leslie will demo how she makes cabochon beads for ring toppers

Bring a snack and a bead for the bead exchange.

Don’t forget your diddy’s!

See you there.

Beer & Beadz – April 2014

Ania’s son Alex made a great sign to welcome everyone at the door. The following people attended: Carol, Helen, Melanie, Silvia, Ken, Lynne and Tamara. It was a great potluck dinner with quiche, salmon, spinach salad, cheeses & meats, followed by some studio time.

We discussed colour matching techniques from two different perspectives:

1. Matching colours of glass that we’ve used in the past with new beads that we want to make. Melanie has a great system for this: she makes a sample, and puts it into a Ziploc baggie with a post it note, describing the glass she used. Melanie gifted these little samples to Ania for hosting – these were a great future inspiration for getting more organized with writing down our own specific bead formulas.

2. Matching colours of glass to current fashion:
Ania uses outfits from “The Style Basket” daily postings on FB as inspiration and matches up glass rods with the outfit colours, then makes her turtles in those shades. Carol has also tried this, making beads for an outfit she purchased to wear herself. It’s also useful to look up the upcoming Pantone season colours to make beads that match the current fashion colour trends. Helen brought three beautiful rods of the rare Lauscha Teal, and gifted to Ania for giving her a start into the world of lampworking.

Ken, Tamara, and Melanie took turns on the torch: Ken showed off his new calla lily technique, and Mel and Tamara worked on off-mandrel leaves. We had a great bead exchange with mainly hearts, flowers, and of course, a turtle.

Overall a fantastic, fun night filled with tons of laughter, food, and conversation with lovely company. Thanks to everyone who made it out to Mission 🙂
