Beer & Beadz – July 2015

The time at Elisabeth’s was a blast.  It is always wonderful to be under the spell of Elisabeth’s wonderful house, studio and amazing hospitality.  The food and wine were all excellent and we all thank you for everything Elisabeth.

It was nice to see Kerri Fuhr rejoin the fold and we also welcomed a newcomer Tammy on the same night.  Later Kerri did a demo for us.

Kerri and Stephanie brought their new creations to show us and they were pretty awesome, Stephanie with her fish and Kerri with her owls.

We had 10 beads this time for the draw this time and as you can see every one of them was amazing.

See everyone next month!

Beer & Beadz – May 2015

May’s B&B was held at Aimee’s studio.  Aimee makes the coolest glass straws!

Before going into Aimee’s studio for a demo, we enjoyed the warm “summer like” evening out on her 2 level patio.  We enjoyed guacamole & chips, various sweets, iced tea and of course beer!

The theme this month was a tool swap.  We also discussed the upcoming 40 bead challenge.  Melanie demonstrated a dot bead and Aimee demonstrated the Mandrel Spinner by Bearfoot Art.

In June the Pacific Pyros will be challenging the Calgary Molten Crew to this challenge.  All the proceeds of this challenge will go to the Beads of Courage.  In order to get the benefit of the actual 40 bead challenge each person will have to follow the rules of Heather Trimlett’s 40 Bead Challenge.  That means using on 2 colours of glass and NO tools.

Melanie Graham will be available to anyone entering this challenge to assist with colour selection if need be.  She can offer advise on what colours work well together or if you want to step outside of the box, she can suggest some interesting colour or glass combinations.   Want a real challenge??  try black and red !!

Beer & Beadz – October 2014 – Updated

Updated!

Another great turn out for our monthly Beer & Beadz!  Kirsten and Al were awesome hosts.

Kirsten demonstrated her “Armadillo” bead and several of us got a chance at the torch to try her technique.

The bead exchange was amazing.  The theme was “black & white” and the challenge was to bring your black & white inspired beads for the exchange.  All I can say is WOW!! The level of imagination was unlimited.

There was no shortage of beautiful beads to look at.  Kirsten has a fabulous table top cabinet where she stores her large collection of beads and Naaz added a few more beads to her collection when Melanie brought out some of her new beads for Show & Tell.  They were a beautiful dichroic blue.

October’s Beer & Beadz will be hosted by Kirsten on October 24 at 6:30/7pm.

The theme is Black & White and we’ve been challenged to think outside the box for this theme. Of course you need to incorporate black & white into your bead but that’s the easy part. This should be fun!

There will be plenty of torch time with plenty of the themed colors available. Is black & white even a color? These colors do not have to be the only colors you use but need to be dominant in the bead.

Bring a snack to share and your themed beads for the bead exchange and don’t forget your diddy’s.

Address details can be found in the event list

Beer & Beadz Host Needed – Updated

Good news!  Ken & Silvia McIntosh will be Novembers Beer & Beadz hosts.  For more details, see the post in the Events section.

We are looking for a host for November’s B&B. If you are interested in hosting November’s Beer & Beadz you can contact myself or any of the Pyros Executive.  Just send an email from the contact page.

As Beer & Beadz host you may choose to do or organize a short demo or just a open torch. You may want to suggest a themed bead exchange or just the bead exchange as usual. You will also need some paper, pen and something to draw names out of for the bead exchange.

Don’t worry about the state of your studio – we’ve squished into some pretty small spaces to see demos and there are often some very knowledgeable members at events who can offer, if asked, some expertise in safety and how to improve your studio set-up.

Your Beer & Beadz can be anytime in the month but they are normally held in the third week of the month.

It is a great opportunity to get feedback and meet new people (who also love glass!).

Beer & Beadz – September 2014 *Updated*

UPDATED

.. September’s Beer & Beads was hosted by Stephanie Dieleman.  Her bright and beautiful studio was the meeting place for a large gathering of Pyros members from Vancouver Island to Chilliwack.  It’s great to see these events so well attended and not just from members in the direct local area.  We even had a new member join this night.  Welcome Jean!

The theme this evening was BUY, SELL & TRADE.  Stephanie had a large amount of glass working tools for sale from presses to shears.  She also layed out oodles of glass, frit and powders for us all to play with during torch time.

She demonstrated her large glass ring beads. She makes it look so easy!  I demonstrated a hot pink bead.  It was the first time I’d ever worked with natural gas rather than propane.  You’ll really have to work at it to get a muddy bead as natural gas burns so clean.

Thanks Stephanie for hosting this months Beer & Beadz!

September’s Beer & Beadz will be held at Stephanie Ann’s studio. If you haven’t been there before YOU MUST see it. It’s awesome! She also teaches art classes, so painting, sewing, and so on. Her B&B will be held on Friday, September 19 at 7pm and her theme is BUY, SELL & TRADE. So if you still have stuff you want to buy, sell or trade bring it.

Stephanie, like Melanie has not yet decided on her demo. I’m sure we could offer suggestions so feel free to send me your ideas and I’ll pass them on.

Bring a little something to share and bring your diddy’s.

Check the Events page for address details.

See you there!

Beer & Beadz – August 2014 UPDATED

UPDATED!

… and for you who missed it, Melanie’s B&B was awesome!  Melanie has the studio we all dream of, lots of room, lots of glass and lots of tools.

The day started a little late as most of us were stuck in a traffic jam in Abbotsford but once through that mess there were more than a dozen of us sitting in Melanie’s 1/2 acre backyard munching on chips, dip, fruit and veggies.

Although she was ready with the BBQ, no one seem to need it.  I think we were all more interested in watching Melanie’s demo!

Melanie demonstrated her beautiful face beads.  She already had molds made and ready to go but she also walked us through preparing the molds using wax.

She also spent time telling us about some of beautiful sculptures and collaborations and what inspired them.

A good time was had by all and thank you Melanie for hosting this Beer & Beadz.  We look forward to your next one.

This months B&B will be held at Melanie Rowe’s studio. Since she lives in Chilliwack her event will be held on Sunday, August 17 and will start anytime after lunch and go until 6 pm. It will be a pot luck, picnic style, get together. If you have burgers or hot dogs bring them as Mel’s got a BBQ. Bring a cooler if you need to keep stuff cold. Bring your beverages, your sunglasses, your sunscreen and a lawn chair.

The theme is Garage Sale so feel free to bring your gently used tools you don’t use anymore or your overstock of glass! Glass always gets lots of attention when your bartering! Just about anything is game for this theme. Melanie hasn’t decided yet what she will be demo’ing so we’re in for a surprise!

For address details, check the Events section.  An RSVP would be appreciated so Melanie has an idea of how many to expect.

See you there!

Beer & Beadz – July 2014

July’s Beer n Beadz was held at Elisabeth’s beautiful garden studio.

The weather was warm, the food was awesome and the turn out was large.

Elisabeth demo’d using enamels in glass bead making.  She sprinkled color on the bead she was making and melted the color in.   The result was a deep color in the middle of the bead and a fade of color to each end.

Beer & Beadz – October 2013

October’s B&B was hosted by Suzanne Basnett.  It was a good turn out.  Suzanne opened her warm cozy studio to us where several members got a chance to play with her Scorpion torch.  Suzanne plays with Boro glass!  She also likes to fuse glass and has a large kiln exclusively for this in her studio.

thanks for hosting Suzanne.

Sorry for my bad pictures.  I need a lesson on iphone photography 🙂

Beer & Beadz – August 2013

August 3, 2013, Steve Kristensen’s studio, Chilliwack, BC

While I wasn’t able to attend Steve’s B&B, it sounds like it was well attended and his studio has been described as everyone’s dream.

As most of you know Steve is also a tool maker and has oodles available.  If you’re looking for those great big hole mandrels, contact Steve.

Beer & Beadz – July 2013

July 11, 2013, Elizabeth Owre’s garden studio, Vancouver, BC

A great get together at Elizabeth’s garden studio.  We enjoyed snacks of fresh fruit and baked goods.  Melanie brought some glass left over from the last Whistler event so we drew names for it.

Elizabeth demo’d her hollow beads and Melanie finished the demo with how to use a reactive purple frit by TAG.  Debbie demo’d a large dotted and dragged disk.
